Shift Details:

Mental health is a top priority at Blaine Family Veterinary Hospital. We typically offer a 4-day work week to support work-life balance, with rotating Saturday shifts. Our hours are as follows: 

Monday – Friday 8-5

Every other Saturday 9-12 (one Saturday a month)

Sundays - CLOSED 

 

* This shift will be Monday, Tuesday Wednesday and Friday (Off on Thursdays) with every 4th Saturday.

 

Compensation:

Our compensation package consists of pay in the $24 - $28 range, based on experience and credentialing, with potential yearly bonus.

The ideal candidate must be a self-propelled, self-starter with proficient technical skills.  We are looking for someone that has experience with surgical monitoring, and anesthesia. We expect our technicians to communicate effictively with clients as well as co-workers, to work together to efficiently drive the flow of patients each day, and provide a high standard of care while having fun at work.

Responsibilities

Veterinary Technician Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include all aspects of patient care, including surgery prep and recovery, radiology, blood draws, cytology, dentistry (including dental radiology), administering medication and treatments as prescribed by the doctors, and client communication. Veterinary Technicians will also administer and monitor anesthesia, place IV catheters and perform subgingival scaling on dental patients. The ideal candidate will:

  • Accurately perform medical math calculations including drug dosages and fluid rates.
  • Have excellent communication skills.
  • Show initiative to continue his/her education and have excellent follow-through skills.
  • Be able to negotiate with difficult people and problem solve.
  • Stay calm and efficient during a medical crisis
  • Enjoy working with people and animals and be able to deal with animals even when they are stressed, ill or in pain.
  • Be flexible in attitude and work habits.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • The veterinary technician must have the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds and over 50 pounds with a coworker.
  • The veterinary technician must be able to endure sitting, standing and walking on hard floor surfaces for extended periods of time.
  • The veterinary technician must possess sufficient ambulatory skills to perform duties while in hospital environment.
  • The veterinary technician must be able to work in noisy work conditions with sounds from animals and equipment that can be moderately high.
  • The veterinary technician will be routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch, and on occasion, exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication/controlled substances.
  • The veterinary technician must have good hand-eye coordination, arm-hand-finger dexterity with the ability to grasp and visual acuity to use a keyboard and operate equipment.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

 

  • The veterinary technician must be proficient in a variety of skills ranging from but not limited to laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, surgery, dental and nursing skills. 
  • Ability to demonstrate patience and composure in stressful situations, and ability to handle a fast-paced environment. 
  • Ability to stay calm and efficient during a medical crisis. 
  • Ability to give SQ, IM and IV injections. 
  • Knowledge of usage, dosage, and common side-effects for commonly used prescription drugs and ability to readily explain them to the clients. 
  • Knowledge of the common anesthesia and recovery states and ability to alert veterinarians when symptoms change or when concerns arise with hospitalized patients. 
  • Ability to properly extubate, monitor temperature and recover a patient from anesthesia. 
  • The veterinary technician must have mental processes for reasoning, remembering, mathematics, and language ability (reading, writing, and speaking the English language) to perform the duties proficiently. 
  •  The veterinary technician must be confident around pets.
